The body of the building was erected in different periods with at least five construction phases. Originally, the church was smaller in size, later enlarged with two striking pairs of arches.<\/p>\n<p>The perimeter walls with the apse and pillars are dated with construction around the second half of the 11th century. The fa\u00e7ade, roof and side portions are presumably dated around the middle of the 12th The Basilica of San Simplicio in Olbia is worth a visit during a holiday in north-eastern Sardinia. Inside is the ancient gilded wooden statue of San Simplicio dating back to 1600. At the foot of the altar, the relics of San Simplicio discovered in the early 1600s during archaeological excavations in the church crypt are kept in a shrine.
